Aspect ratio

The ratio of the tire's sidewall height to its section width, expressed as a percentage. In 295/75R22.5, the "75" means the sidewall height is 75% of the 295 mm nominal section width. Aspect ratio helps explain why two tires with the same rim diameter can have different overall diameters and loaded radius.

Use aspect ratio only as a sizing clue. Before substituting sizes, confirm overall diameter, loaded radius, approved rim width, minimum dual spacing, and load capacity from current manufacturer data. A lower aspect ratio may change ride height and revolutions per mile even when the wheel diameter is unchanged.

Real-World Use

A fleet comparing 11R22.5 and 295/75R22.5 uses the aspect ratio to understand why the metric tire is shorter overall despite a wider section width. The fleet then checks manufacturer diameter data before changing a drive axle spec.
