Bead

Last reviewed: 2026-05-20

The reinforced edge of a tire that seals against the wheel rim flange and holds the tire in position. The bead is constructed of high-tensile steel wire bundled in rubber. Bead damage — from curb impact, mounting errors, or running flat — can compromise the seal and may not be repairable.

Bead damage is often hidden and easily overlooked. Inspect the bead area when a tire repeatedly fails to hold pressure at the rim interface.

Real-World Use

A tire mounted after a flat-towing incident shows a slow bead leak — the bead was deformed during the flat-run, preventing a complete seal against the rim.
