Overall diameter

Last reviewed: 2026-05-20

The outer diameter of an inflated, unloaded tire measured from tread surface to tread surface through the centerline. Overall diameter affects ride height, fender clearance, gearing, speedometer accuracy, revolutions per mile, and whether two tires can be paired in a dual set without one dragging against the other.

Match overall diameter closely when checking dual sets or approving a size substitution. A difference that looks small on paper can change load sharing and heat buildup in dual service. Use manufacturer dimensions for the exact tire model, not only the nominal size printed on the sidewall.

Real-World Use

A fleet switching from 11R22.5 to 295/75R22.5 checks overall diameter because the difference affects fifth-wheel height and speedometer accuracy. The change is treated as a vehicle specification decision, not just a tire purchase.
