Service description

Last reviewed: 2026-05-20

The part of the sidewall marking that states load index, speed symbol, load range, and sometimes single or dual service information separate from the size string. It is the shorthand that connects the tire to its approved capacity and speed use. On a commercial tire, the size alone does not prove that the tire is acceptable for a steer, drive, or trailer position.

Read the complete service description, not just the size. Two tires of the same size can carry different load indexes, load ranges, or speed symbols. When a road call or counter quote mentions only "295/75R22.5," ask for the full sidewall service description before approving the tire.

Real-World Use

A buyer comparing two 295/75R22.5 tires from different suppliers checks the full service description and finds different load ranges. The cheaper tire fits the rim, but its service description points to a lower capacity table, so it is rejected for the loaded axle.
