Glossary
Tire Identification Number
The full identifier molded into the tire sidewall starting with "DOT" — includes manufacturer code, plant code, tire type/size code, and the four-digit date code. Required by 49 CFR Part 574.
Record the full TIN — not just the date code — when logging tire history. The complete TIN is needed for recall searches.
Real-World Use
A fleet manager tracking tires for recall purposes notes the full TIN for each tire so the entire identifier is available if a recall is announced for a specific production range.
What to Pair It With
Read this term with the full tire sidewall, vehicle rating information, manufacturer documentation, and the actual condition of the tire.
