Wide-base tire

Last reviewed: 2026-05-20

A single wide tire that replaces a dual assembly at one wheel end, often called a wide-base single or super single. The tire uses a wider wheel and a different load-rating structure than a standard dual pair. It changes weight, fuel-efficiency potential, roadside service options, spare inventory, and how tire failures affect the vehicle.

Wide-base tires are not interchangeable with standard dual setups. Confirm wheel compatibility, load rating, offset, clearance, carrier policy, and roadside replacement support before converting any axle. A fleet also needs a plan for what happens when one wide-base tire fails away from its normal service network.

Real-World Use

A fleet evaluating fuel efficiency considers wide-base singles for trailer axles, then checks load rating, wheel inventory, spare logistics, route coverage, and customer requirements before committing. The fuel saving is weighed against downtime risk and the loss of a standard dual spare strategy.
