Zipper failure

Last reviewed: 2026-05-20

A sudden lateral sidewall rupture that can occur when a tubeless tire that was run flat or severely underinflated is reinflated. The internal cords may have been damaged by heat and flexing even when the outside of the tire does not show obvious damage. When pressure is added, the weakened sidewall can release violently along a zipper-like line.

Use an inflation cage, clip-on air chuck, remote inflation line, and OSHA-required procedures when reinflating any tire that may have been run flat or severely low. Do not stand beside the sidewall during inflation. If the tire history is unknown, treat it as suspect until a trained tire professional inspects it.

Real-World Use

A shop technician reinflating a tire that arrived completely flat places it in a restraining cage per OSHA requirements. The tire is not simply aired up on the floor because prior underinflation history is unknown and zipper failure risk is elevated.
