Cord exposure

Last reviewed: 2026-05-20

A condition where the structural fiber material beneath the tread rubber or inside the sidewall has become visible through the outer surface. Cord exposure in the tread (from wear through the tread depth) or in the sidewall (from impact or structural damage) is an out-of-service condition and an immediate removal trigger. A tire with exposed cord should not be operated.

Exposed cord visible as bright metallic or light-colored fibers in the tread or sidewall means the structural integrity is compromised — remove immediately.

Real-World Use

A pre-trip inspection finds a shiny metallic area in the inner sidewall of a drive tire — steel cord is visible through a deep gouge from prior road debris contact. The tire is removed before departure.
