Dual spacing

The clearance relationship between two tires mounted side by side in a dual assembly, usually described by the distance between tire centerlines or by the minimum space between adjacent sidewalls. Adequate dual spacing prevents sidewall contact when the tires flex under load, heat up, and deflect through turns.

Check dual spacing when switching tire sizes, profiles, wheels, or brands with different actual section widths. Inadequate spacing can create sidewall rubbing, heat, abrasion, and early casing damage even when both tires appear correctly mounted while parked.

Real-World Use

A shop technician installing wider replacement tires on a trailer axle measures the resulting dual spacing with the tires inflated and confirms it meets the tire manufacturer's minimum before releasing the trailer. The tire size fits the rim, but spacing is still verified separately.
