Flat spot

A localized area of reduced tread depth on one side of the circumference, caused by wheel lockup during braking, extended parking on a deflated tire, or long-term static storage. Flat spots produce a rhythmic vibration or thump at highway speed. Mild flat spots may partially drive out; severe or structural flat spots require tire removal.

A flat spot that does not reduce after 10–15 highway miles should be inspected for depth loss and structural damage rather than waiting for it to drive out.

Real-World Use

A truck picked up from an extended layoff vibrates at highway speed — a tread inspection finds flat areas on two tires consistent with deflated parking over several months.
