A safety restraint device required by OSHA (29 CFR 1910.177) when inflating tires that may have been run flat or that have unknown prior condition. The cage contains the tire and rim if a zipper failure occurs during reinflation. Using an inflation cage is mandatory in shop settings when the tire's condition is uncertain.

Never reinflate a tire that has been run flat or severely underinflated outside of a proper inflation cage. This applies even when working roadside — follow your carrier's safety procedures.

Real-World Use

A tire arriving at the shop completely flat from a roadside pickup is placed in an inflation cage before any air is added — following OSHA requirements and protecting shop personnel from the risk of zipper failure.
