Irregular wear

Last reviewed: 2026-05-20

Any tread wear pattern that does not progress evenly across the full tread width and circumference. Irregular wear patterns include center wear, edge wear, one-side wear, cupping, feathering, heel-toe wear, and diagonal patterns. Each pattern indicates a specific or combination of causes involving pressure, load, alignment, or suspension.

The pattern of irregular wear is more informative than the presence of wear itself — identify the specific pattern before deciding on the correction.

Real-World Use

A fleet tire audit finds irregular wear on multiple axle positions and categorizes each pattern separately — some positions need alignment service, others need pressure policy revision, and one needs a suspension inspection.
