Radial tire

Last reviewed: 2026-05-20

A tire with casing cord plies running radially from bead to bead at roughly 90 degrees to the direction of travel, stabilized by belt plies under the tread. Modern highway commercial truck tires are overwhelmingly radial, and the "R" in a size such as 11R22.5 or 295/75R22.5 identifies radial construction.

Do not mix radial and bias-ply tires on the same axle or in a dual assembly. The constructions flex differently under load, which can affect handling, heat buildup, and wear. On older equipment, confirm construction before ordering replacements because a size match alone does not prove construction match.

Real-World Use

A fleet replacing tires on older vocational equipment checks whether the current tires are radial or bias-ply before ordering. The size appears available in both forms, so the purchasing note specifies radial construction and the approved service position.
