Rim width

Last reviewed: 2026-05-20

The interior width of the wheel measured between the rim flanges where the tire beads seat. Tire manufacturers specify an approved rim-width range for each tire size. A rim that is too narrow or too wide changes the tire's section shape, contact patch, bead seating, and published dimensional assumptions.

Check the manufacturer's approved rim-width range before mounting a tire on a wheel of uncertain history. This matters especially when changing from standard-profile to low-profile sizes, buying used wheels, or investigating irregular rib wear that could come from a distorted tread face.

Real-World Use

A maintenance shop buying used wheels checks the rim width markings and compares them against the approved range for the tire size being installed. The wheel diameter matches, but one wheel is too narrow for the proposed tire, so it is kept out of service for that application.
