Rotation

Last reviewed: 2026-05-20

The practice of moving tires between axle positions or wheel positions to even out normal position-based wear. Common drive-axle rotation moves tires between forward and rear drive axles or between inner and outer dual positions. Trailer rotation may address scrub from tight-turn service, while steer-to-drive movement requires confirming the tire is approved for the new position.

Rotation can manage normal wear but does not fix the mechanical causes of irregular wear. Record the original position before moving the tire, inspect the axle for repeat-position wear, and correct pressure, alignment, suspension, or dual-matching problems before using rotation as the answer.

Real-World Use

A fleet manager noticing one drive position consuming tires faster than others asks maintenance to inspect the axle before simply rotating the next set. The inspection finds a worn torque rod, explaining why tires rotated into that position developed the same heel-toe pattern.
