Shoulder

Last reviewed: 2026-05-20

The transition zone where the tread face meets the tire sidewall. The shoulder is a high-stress area because it carries load, flexes under side forces, and sheds heat from both the tread and sidewall. Shoulder wear, shoulder cracking, and shoulder separation often point to pressure, load, alignment, or heat history.

Inspect the shoulder carefully on any tire with pressure loss, sidewall scuffing, edge wear, or a new vibration complaint. The shoulder can hide early tread lift or belt-edge movement before the center tread looks damaged. Measure the shoulder rib separately rather than averaging it with the rest of the tread.

Real-World Use

A trailer tire with a history of intermittent pressure loss shows edge wear concentrated at the shoulder. The technician records the low shoulder reading, checks the sidewall for heat damage, and inspects the mate tire before returning the dual set to service.
