Wheel end

Last reviewed: 2026-05-20

The complete mechanical assembly at each wheel position, including hub, bearings, seals, spindle, wheel mounting hardware, and related brake components. A wheel-end problem can change how the tire contacts the road, creating cupping, vibration, heat, or irregular wear that first appears to be only a tire complaint.

When investigating irregular wear, check wheel-end condition alongside tire pressure, alignment, and suspension. A tire with cupping or vibration may be showing the symptom of bearing play, runout, mounting looseness, or brake heat rather than a defect in the tread itself.

Real-World Use

A technician diagnosing cupping wear on a steer tire inspects the wheel-end bearings and finds measurable play consistent with a worn bearing. Replacing only the tire would have produced the same pattern again on the next tire.
